Medical Miracle in Thessaloniki

diavalkanikoA nineteen-year-old girl in Thessaloniki underwent a six and a half hour surgery of tumor removal and won the fight for her life, thanks to a global medical miracle. The doctors of the Interbalkan Medical Center in Thessaloniki removed a 14 cm tumor from her lung and heart.
The operation was performed on February 5, while the girl was two days in intensive care and  will be discharged on Feb. 15. “Her heart works perfectly”, Evangelos Sivitanidis, head of the medical team, noted.
The nineteen year- old girl had undergone a surgery for the first time at the age of 13 for osteosarcoma in her legs. One year ago, she was operated for metastatic tumor in her left lung, which was finally removed. Now, there was a local recurrence of the same sarcoma in the left lung with an infiltration into the left atrium of the heart.
As stated by the head of the team Evangelos Sivitanidis, similar tumors are very rare and are treated as unresectable. He stated that the only comparable incident, was recorded in the international medical history 23 years ago (Tokyo-1991), but had to do with a smaller tumor. The nineteen-year-old girl’s life was for him “a bet which had to be won.”
