Greek Τeachers Head for Cyprus

sxollllWith their pay cut 30 percent or more, and the government curtailing the number of new hires, the number of Greek school teachers looking for work in Cyprus has doubled over the last five years, statistics from authorities show, even though the island country has now been hit with an economic crisis too.
Numbers show that some 10,200 Greek teachers submitted applications to work on Cyprus in the last year, which means 25 percent of the applicants for positions are from Greece, according to Cyprus’s Educational Service Committee.
Currently, 24 percent of primary school teachers, 26.5 percent of junior high school teachers and 6.5 percent of senior high school teachers on Cyprus are from Greece and the numbers are expected to continue to grow as young professionals are rapidly fleeing Greece, where the unemployment rate for those under 25 is more than 67 percent.
