Female Abuse in Greece

rape1_420_420On March 8, the day that marks International Women’s Day, some shocking information came to light.
According to SOS 15900, a telephone line for immediate advice for all women victims of violence, more than 7,000 women in Greece have been victims of abuse.
In only two years since its operation, the service has received more than 10,020 calls.
Of these, 7,909 were complaints over gendered violence. 5,874 of them were made ​​by the women themselves, the other 2,035 were made by third parties. Of these calls, 23 were related to trafficking. Two calls were made by the women themselves and 21 by third parties. The remaining 2,111 calls were related to various info requests, as well as 71 received e-mails.
All these elements are included in a document Deputy Interior Minister, Charalambos Athanassiou has, which was submitted to Parliament after Democratic Left MPs Maria Yannakaki , Katerina Markou, Yannis Panousis and Maria Repoussi raised the question of the serious dimension of women’s trafficking in Greece.
The first national Women’s Day was observed on Feb. 28, 1909 in the United States. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements.
