Panathinaikos Dumps Fabri For Blasting Players

fabri_angry_390_3103Fabri Gonzalez has joined a growing list of coaches at the beleaguered once-dominant Greek soccer team Panathinaikos to get the boot, the third one this year to be sacked this season after disappointing results, and after he said some of his players weren’t trying.
Gonzalez got the heave-ho after The Greens, as they are known, lost to Platanias, 1-0 on March 31 and after he criticized his players. The loss left the Athens club in sixth place in the Greek league, three points behind PAS Giannina.
After the defeat, the 57-year-old Fabri, as he is known, strongly criticized Panathinaikos players saying:  “In this Panathinaikos squad there are players who do not have the blood or the balls to wear the shirt. We need to see who can keep wearing it – some players went out on the pitch without understanding what exactly the team is playing for.
“I am very upset. Managers have to analyze the situation and see who deserves to stay in the team; to hit his hand on the table and make decisions. This is my opinion. I’m talking about all this now because I remained silent in the past. I tried to be polite as far as I did after the match with Aris. It’s time to see things clearly.”
Team management has a history of getting rid of coaches instead of players who many fans believe go through the motions of playing instead of trying their best.
“Panathinaikos FC announces the termination of its cooperation with coach Fabriciano Gonzalez and his assistant Ferreira King by mutual agreement. The club would like to thank both men for their help at a very crucial time for the club and wishes them the best of luck in their careers. The new coach until the end of the season is Yiannis Vonortas,” the club stated on their official website.
The academy coach Yiannis Vonortas,a former Panathinaikos player, will be Panathinaikos’s coach until the end of the season. Vonortas is the fourth coach for the season after Jesualdo Ferreira, Juan Ramon Rocha and Fabri.
