Turkish Tourism Cites Cyprus Crisis

cyprusad_390_0104 (1)The Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus, in an advertising spot in the United Kingdom, boasted to potential visitors it uses the Turkish lira, in a shot at the Greek Cypriot government which is confiscating up to 80 percent of big bank deposits to help right an economic crisis that has undermined confidence in the euro among some.

There are no “euro worries” in the northern part of Cyprus as the advertisement says. Northern Cyprus, which only the government there and Turkey recognizes as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, is a self-declared state that comprises the northeastern part of the island of Cyprus.
Northern Cyprus is considered by the international community as occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus. Tourism is an important source of revenues for Cyprus, bringing in more than 2.5 million visitors last year.
