It’s been a miserable season for fans of the Panathinaikos soccer and basketball teams which are not faring well in the Greek sports league, and now police arrested 10 of them who authorities said were trying to enter the Municipal Indoor Stadium of Holargos with a range of weapons, from Molotov Cocktails to pepper sprays and clubs.
The game was between AEK and Holargos and police said the Panithinaikos fans were targeting their AEK rivals.
It’s not uncommon in Greek sports for fans to toss flares and other objects during games, sometimes to such extent that the matches have to be stopped. Hooliganism takes place frequently during games and fans are unafraid to battle with police as arrests are infrequent.
