Cyprus University Honors Costas Gavras

costa-gavrasThe University of Cyprus appointed noted film director Costas Gavras as Honorary Doctor at the Philosophy Department.
Mihalis Pieris, professor at the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies,  presented the life and the works of the acclaimed director. Pieris stressed that, “Costas Gavras’ films reveal a personality whose unique talent, political criticism, sensitivity for the political and social reality are undeniable.
“Gavras’ interest is permanently focused on the common problems and the personal tragedies of ordinary people. He often approaches the plot with the perspective of documentary, a fact that enhances plausibility. He does not only want to convince the audience but also to raise political awareness among spectators, so they will cease to be idle, while all around people, states and countries are collapsing,” he added.
During the ceremony, scenes from Capital, the new film by Gavras, were projected for the first time on Cyprus. Gavras stated that he felt he’d received a “unique” honor. He underlined that he has a special relation and love for Cyprus, saying that he visited the island before 1974 and went to the part of Cyprus that now is occupied. He said that he believed Cyprus would overcome its economic crisis.
