LLLL_597_355Opponents of a gold mine project in northern Greece aren’t backing down from confrontations with authorities who want the development to go ahead and create jobs, with dissenters from the village of Ierisso blockading roads after two residents there charged in a previous arson attack on the mining company’s equipment.

Protesters threw tires across the road near the entrance to the village in an attempt to prevent access as another way of showing their contempt for the project underway by the Canadian company Eldorado Gold, and its Greek subsidiary, Hellenic Gold.

Meanwhile, others organized solidarity rallies in the surrounding communities, especially in Thessaloniki.A series of solidarity protests are being organized by committees from Thessaloniki and Halkidiki over the arrests. Pamphlets were to be passed out in front of the statue of Venizelos in Thessaloniki, while a demonstration has been planned for April 12 outside the Thessalonkiki police headquarters where the two suspects are in custody.

More protests has been set for April 13in Thessaloniki and the next day when the two defendants will enter pleas. The protesters say the project will harm the environment and ruin tourism in the area although company officials said they all the necessary permits and environmental approval from the government.
