SDOE Pushed On Lagarde List Report

New Lagarde list CDTired of foot-dragging by Greece’s Financial Crimes Squad (SDOE) in delivering a report on a list of Greeks with secret Swiss bank accounts, members of a Parliament committee investigating it said they want it produced.
The panel is trying to find who deleted the names of three relatives of former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou before June 10 when SDOE has estimated that its investigation will be complete.
Papaconstantinou has denied any wrongdoing although he said there were problems with the handling of the list of 2,062 Greeks with $1.95 billion in the Geneva branch of HSBC that still hasn’t been checked for possible tax cheats more than 2 1/2 years after he first got it.
He said it disappeared mysteriously, but then his successor as finance chief, now the PASOK Socialist chief Evangelos Venizelos, produced a copy that he said he didn’t check either. Former Prime Minister George Papandreou, who appointed both men, said he knew nothing about the list and was never informed about it although he was imposing harsh austerity measures on the orders of international lenders to secure bailouts at a time when the country was desperate for revenues.
Parliament officials said the body would vote on April 15 whether to extend the deadline for its findings until April 25 when Parliament will break for Orthodox Easter, which this year is on May 5. Parliament often takes extended breaks and has yet to act on bringing its workers under austerity measures the lawmakers and government have imposed on almost everyone else.
Christos Markoyiannakis, the conservative MP heading the committee, said that SDOE was urged to work faster but was told that he would get a rush job. SDOE official Giorgos Karasmanis, is due to testify before the committee on April 16.
The list is named for former French finance minister Christine Lagarde, now head of one of Greece’s lenders, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) who gave it to Papaconstantinou in 2010.
