Greek Composer Nini Zaha Passes Away

ZaxaGreek composer and singer Nini Zaha passed away on the morning of April 15, at the age of 82. She started her career in Greek music in 1938, as a wunderkind in the artistic group Attic’s Pound (I Mantra tou Attik). During her long and high-profile career, she sung many Greek and foreign songs.
She was born in 1931, in Thessaloniki. During the Fifth International Song Festival in Barcelona (1963), Zaha’s song Maria-Maria (lyrics by Danae) ranked fifth. In 1964, her song In Palma, performed by Zaha and Jimmy Makulis, was awarded the Third Prize in the Palma Song Festival.
Some of her well-known songs are: We will be near the fireplace indeed (Konta sto tzaki thamaste alithia), I will love you and don’t you worry (Ego tha s agapo kai mi se noiazei), A mailman is my only joy (Enas tahidromos moni pia hara mou), Leave then (Fyge loipon), A prayer (Mia prosefhi), In the seas of her eyes (Ston mation tis tis thalasses), Tomorrow (Avrio), It was a flirt and nothing more (Ena flert itan auto kai tipot allo), I love only one (Ma ego agapo mia), Don’t touch me, don’t (Mi m aggizeis, mi), Love is not like this (Den in etsi i agapi), Where are you friends (Pou isaste filoi), There has to be a way (Prepei na yparhei kapoios tropos), I miss you (Mou leipeis esy).
Vinyl LP records that include Zaha’s songs, sung by other female singers (mainly by Aleka Kanellidou): Come to the present time (Ela sto simera) (1977), If I was born again (An xanagenniomouna) (1981), How hard it is to be a woman (Poso dyskolo einai na eisai gynaika) (1982), If I will love you (An tha s agapiso) (1983), We are to blame (Ftaime) (1991).
Records with songs written and sung by her: Yesterday, today (Hthes, simera) (1977). Records in which she participates singing other composers’ songs: Living again in Mantratou (Xanazontas stin Mantratou) (1965), Athens is singing Hatzidaki (I Athina tragouda Hatzidaki) (1968), Nini Zaha in the most beautiful Attic’s songs (I Nini Zaha sta oraiotera tragoudia tou Attik) (1969), Mimis Plessas: What to remember first (Mimis Plessas: Ti na protothimitho) (1985).
Nini Zaha’s funeral will be held on April 17, in the Cemetery of Paleo Faliro at 5.30 p.m.
