senior tourismGreece is hoping to tap one of its most lucrative markets for tourists, senior citizens who have money and time on their hands and like to travel. The elderly are expected to will represent 24% of the global market in 2030 and a good 28% in 2050, respectively.
The world’s population is aging, creating a big niche of old people who have retired and want to spend some of their time traveling. The trend is expected to start turning around in 2050.
Senior tourism can become a critical factor in lengthening the tourist season for Greece, according to a study realized by the Institute for Tourism Research and Forecasts (ITEP) over the Senior Tourism presented to Tourism Minister Olga Kefaloyianni.
As the Head of the Hellenic Chamber of Hotels (HCH) Giorgos Tsakiris emphasized,  within the past few years, the country may have been offering some great luxury class family resorts but has failed to go after the elderly and put together packages that appeal to them.
Senior tourists such as Austrians (26%), Dutch (22%), Belgians (22%) and Germans 21%, choose to combine their summer vacations, apart with recreation and relaxation purposes, with cultural visits and religious reasons as well.
Based on the tourist map of Greece, a great percentage of the elderly visit hotels in Central Greece (42.5%) and in Epirus – Thessaly (42.9%). In contrast, a smaller tourist flow has been recorded in hotels in the Cyclades-Dodecanese (29.9%) and in the Ionian Islands (31%).
The survey also showed that only 9.5% of the hotels care to integrate to their service packages some additional activities for the elderly, such as traditional tastes’ evenings or senior prom parties.
