Thessaloniki Through German Photog's Lense

ExbFull_INGO2How is Thessaloniki photographed by a “foreigner” professional photographer? What are the differences and the similarities of the perspective that a German photographer can have about a city of northern Greece?
“Although I learned Greek, the camera was always my ‘dictionary.’ It was my way to approach and understand the Greek language and culture – the movements, the laughs, or gloom. Taking photos was for me an exercise of flexibility, something like psychological gymnastics in the perpetual action of approaching the people and the sites,” says Ingo Dünnebier, who has lived in Thessaloniki for 25 years.
His work is being presented at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki, a retrospective exhibition of the special moments that he recorded. It will run from April 27-June 9.  The exhibition is entitled He Lives and Works in Thessaloniki, 1987-2012.
Hercules Papaioannou, the steward of the exhibition, said that the works constitute “an idiomatic self-portrait with which he aims to identify his pending cases with the city.”  The exhibition is co-organized by the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the Goethe-Institut of Thessaloniki.
