USEUM, The Wikipedia of Art

USEUMA digital crossroads for artists, art lovers and art organizations opened its wings two months ago with the fanciful name USEUM, which may refer to the Latin word ‘museum’, though it is a purely Greek concept.
Today, this original museum includes 5,084 exhibits created by 419 artists from 73 countries, claiming a place in the Hall of Fame lovers of modern art form in direct interaction with the platform useum.org.
The idea of USEUM’s creation was born about a year ago in London by a Greek doctoral student at UCL. During her study on the new technologies for museums, 25-year-old Foteini Valeonti came across the following challenge: “The creation of a widespread website, a” Wikipedia”, for the world of art.” Her participation in Athens Startup Weekend 2012, where USEUM won first prize, opened the way to make her idea real.
The funding of 120,000 euros, which was based on the valuation of the company at around 1,150,000 euros, gave credit to Valeonti’s  expectations as well as to three more people who stood by her, her two brothers and a good friend of hers, who are also the co-founders of the company.
“USEUM is a platform of collaborative creation. A social network that allows users to rate projects, make ‘like’ commenting, even enrich the profile of their favorite artist with their favorite works, which have already been posted on the Internet,” Valeonti said. The projects are exhibited either by the artists themselves, who have a chance in this way to show and share their work and communicate with their fans worldwide, or with users after the artist’s consent.
