Greece Heads EU Jobless Rate List

04_UNEMPLOYMENTGreece has held on to its dubious position as having the highest unemployment rate in the European Union, a record 27.2 percent for the country, with 6 out of 10 under 25 now out of work as the government is trying frantically to figure out a way to create jobs – and preparing to fire 15,000 civil servants at the same time.
The figures released by Eurostat on April 30 showed the average rate across the Eurozone of the 17 countries using the euro, which includes Greece and Cyprus, was an average 12.1 percent, up slightly in March from 12 percent the month before. In the wider EU, which has 27 countries, the average stayed the same at 10.9 percent.
After Greece, the highest rates were in Spain (26.7 percent) and Portugal (17.5 percent). The lowest rates were recorded in Austria (4.7 percent), Germany (5.4 percent), Luxembourg (5.7 percent) and The Netherlands (6.4 percent).
