Greek Wine Culture

imagesFor Greeks, wine is not just a simple consumer product, but reveals the way and quality of their life, traditions and culture.
About this “cultural product with history and roots that stretch back thousands of years” and the efforts made to inform and educate the public on its consumption, Dr. Panagiotis Tataridis, Lecturer at the Department of Enology and Beverage Technology, President of the Pan-Hellenic Union of Registered Enologists and member of the Wine Information Council (WIC), spoke to ANA-MPA.
As he noted, “Consumers’ knowledge on wine, its characteristics and its influence on health is not well developed to be consistent with the existing modern practice and scientific knowledge. Today, given that an increasing number of consumers become wine lovers, demands to learn more about it. For the information and education of consumers, executives from the wine sector as well as from chain sales are required so as to inform consumers, answer their questions and create a framework for responsible consumption.”
Wine is a product which is consumed mostly for delight and for its organoleptic characteristics as well. In Greece, more than 300 varieties of wine grapes are recorded, with plenty of aromas and flavors. “It is highly important to maintain, strengthen and spread within our country and abroad this model of responsible drinking, in order to prevent alcoholic beverages- abuse of young people, and older consumers as well, through information and awareness.”
Within the framework of the training of the wine industry’s executives and consumers’ information, the National Association of Graduate Enologists, participates in the European LLP action – Leonardo da Vinci «Partnerships»- in Lifelong Education and Training on Wine, Health and consumption.
