Greek Teacher Exam Strike Fizzles

uni_entry_examsGreek teachers who had been ordered not to strike on the first day of university entrance exams, showed up to monitor the tests on May 17, giving up their plans to protest requirements for extra work without pay.
They had said they would not work the exams but Prime Minister Antonis Samaras again invoked a civil mobilization order that had rarely been used since he took power, ordering them not to strike or they could be arrested and fired.
He did so previously with striking Metro workers and seamen but this is the first time the government issued a pre-emptive order barring a strike before it happened.
The exams began without any problems. The number of high school students who will take part this year is around 110,000, while Greece provides only 70,000 places at universities and technical institutes, 3 percent fewer than last year, although the admission requirements are very low. Next week the students are going to sit papers in biology, physics, math and history.
OLME, the Greek Secondary Education Teachers’ Union, backed away from its planned walkout. OLME had previously failed to gain support for its cause by the two main labor unions, GSEE and ADEDY, as well as the public.
