For the first time in the history of the Greek theater, the audience will have the opportunity to watch the theatrical adaptation of The Iliad of Homer.
In the Athens Festival, the contemporary adaptation of the Iliad directed by Stathis Livathinos, will be presented by Polyplanity Productions on June 4-8.
Fifteen actors and actresses appear in the play based on Dimitris Maronitis’ translation.
The director narrates along with the actors and actresses the thrilling epic poem, through which contemporary Greece emerges. They tell the audience the story of the most violent war of all times and transform the text into a series of poetic images that are cruel and tender at the same time, in a totally modern theme.
Who is the modern hero and what does heroism mean? For how long can a human being endure the forthcoming loss? Why has civil conflict proved to be a Greek phenomenon? How much disaster and anger can one endure?
In Homer’s epic, there is neither winner or defeated. It is the conversation between two generations; that of the angry hero Achilles and of the wise father Priam. It is about how two generations can reconcile. Rage, indignation and anger comprise a model of existence condemned to end up in understanding and forgiveness.
