Velos Mutiny Honored in Special Ceremony

navyA special event was held on May 23 at the Grove of Nautical Tradition, at Flisvos Marina, to honor the Naval Movement and the Mutiny of the destroyer Velos. The President of the Parliament, Evangelos Meimarakis, and the political and military leadership of the Ministry of Defense attended the event.
All the speakers praised the personality of Admiral Nikos Pappas, the chief of Velos then, who passed away on 5 April, 2013. The event was also attended by representatives of parties of the major and minor opposition, the General Secretary of the Government, Takis Baltakos, the Mayor of Palaio Faliro, Dionysios Chatzidakis, and other officials.
The Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff, Evangelos Apostolakis, stressed that the Navy Movement and the Velos Mutiny constitute the first official questioning of the regime of the junta and it is a fact of great political importance, as they proved that the regime didn’t have the support of all the Armed Forces. Referring to Admiral Nikos Pappas, he commented that his heroism is a valuable legacy for the Hellenic Navy. He assured that the Navy, relying on tradition and innovation as well, is ready to fulfill its mission.
Defense Minister, Panos Panagiotopoulos, stressed that the Navy Movement and the Velos Mutiny were defining moments during the junta, as they showed that the regime didn’t have control of the Armed Forces. Referring to the political changeover period, he spoke about errors, but he stressed that the balance of the Republic is still positive.
