Blue Flag For 88 Cretan Beaches

bluBeaches and a marina on the Greek island of Crete won a total of 88 Blue flags out of 393 that were awarded to the cleanest beaches in European and nine marinas in the whole country.
The fllags awarded to Crete for the year 2013 were eight less compared to the same number in 2012. The regional unit of Lasithi was first on a pan-Hellenic basis with 36 Blue flags.
Greece is second worldwide among 49 countries in 2013, as it was the year before. The International Committee awarded 3,103 beaches and 626 marinas in the whole world.
Among the champion prefectures are these of Lasithi with 36 awarded beaches, of Corfu and of Chalkidiki with 35 each and of the Dodecanese Islands with 25.
A beach or a marina is awarded with Blue flag according to the following criteria: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, safety and services.
