Greek Competitiveness Keeps Sliding

7E07177218E9583920735A1924054D81Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ hopes of getting the country out of a crushing economic crisis took a hit with this year’s results of the World Competitiveness Yearbook of International Institute for Management Development (IMD) survey showing the country ranks 54th out of 60 in competitiveness.
And that’s an improvement over last year’s ranking at number 58, but still far down the ladder of countries rated on how well they can compete around the world.
Each country among these 60 countries participating in the World Competitiveness Yearbook, is ranked according to the performance achieved in the four sub-categories judging efficiency in business, economics, government and infrastructure.
Greece is showing its best improvement in the Business Efficiency field having bumped up nine places and now is in the 47th place. There is also an improvement in government efficiency” field with Greece coming up two places.
In contrary to this, the other two sectors are recorded to be worsening as in the field of “economic efficiency” with Greece next to last, falling a position for its worst ranking ever and it also fell one spot on the economic efficiency indicator.
Greece is 6th place in the world based on its skilled and experienced workforce available, in 10th place in terms of revenues from tourism, in the 19th in terms of exports, and in 5th place for having well-trained and efficient engineers.
The classification is based on testimonies of 4.000 business executives worldwide. The top countries are USA, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Sweden, Singapore, Norway, Canada and the United Arab Emirates.
Germany climbed to the 9th place from the 16th it was in 1997, “thanks to the exports, the strong field of small and medium enterprises, the fiscal discipline and the highly skilled workers”, according to the report, while the respondents mentioned the inadequacy of the government officials and the “not very friendly” business environment as the most important disadvantages.
As for the rest Eurozone countries, France is in the 28th place, Italy in the 44th, Spain in 45th and Portugal in 46th place.
