Acropolis Rally 2013 Begins

Acropolis RallyThe 6th rally competition of the World Rally Championship, Acropolis Rally 2013, is about to begin on the afternoon of May 31.

Forty-seven crews from all over the world, seven Greeks among them, will participate in the Acropolis Rally 2013. On June 1-2, 26 more crews from Greece will compete in the Greek Championship’s race.
At the World Rally Championship’s rating, after five races in Monte Carlo, Sweden, Mexico, Portugal and Argentina, the winner in three out of five races, Sebastian Ozie precedes with 122 points.
For Greece, Lambros Athanassoulas with Mitsubishi EVO X in Jet Oil’s colors and Giannis Zounis, Number One Greek for 2012 in the Brigade’s colors have stood out. Harris Kaltsounis will make history, as he will be participating in the Acropolis Rally for the 40th time.
The race includes a total of 14 special routes and 306 km. The Ceremonial Start will take place at Zappion, at the heart of Athens, on May 31, at 5 pm. On June 1, two special routes are included at the same spot Kineta-Pissia. The first route with a length of 47.7 km is the longest of the races.
The Acropolis Rally began in 1951 and ever since it has been held consistently with very few exceptions. It was included in the World Rally Championship. For 2013, it is limited only to the Region of the Peloponnese, while previously it was carried out in two regions. The race’s center that was in Lamia, was transferred to Loutraki in the previous years.
A moment to remember from recent years was the extremely special route that was held in the Olympic Athletic Center of Athens that was overcrowded with people, but which did not continue. Ever memorable Colin McRae participated in the past in the Acropolis Rally gaining five victories (1996, 1998 Subaru, 2000, 2001, 2002 Ford).
Aris Vovos won in 1995, a year that the race did not count in the World Rally Championship. In 2010 the race was out of program, while Ozie won in 2011 and Loeb in 2012, both with a Citroen DS3.
