Throat Cancer Cases Caused by HPV

F7592C65F2E45F2E3040171065202C1CHuman Papilloma Virus (HPV) is responsible for developing a 15 to 20 percent of the total number of oropharyngeal (throat) cancer incidences. Especially, HPV 16 and 18 infections are strongly associated with an increased odds ratio of developing oropharyngeal (throat) cancer. As Michael Douglas’ case was made known, HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer.
Greece has no official data concerning this type or any type of cancer. However, scientists estimate that 15 to 20 percent of throat cancer development in Greece is caused by HPV. In any case, this type of cancer is less common that, for example, lung cancer or breast cancer.
It is important to note that at the Otolarynogology (or ENT) University Clinic of the Hippokratio Hospital every year at least 200 new incidences of oropharyngeal (throat) cancer are recorded. The number of these incidences has been increasing the last 15 years.
The positive fact is that, according to professor Aristides Sismanis this type of throat cancer is easier to be diagnosed compared to other types of cancer. In Greece, the average age for throat cancer manifestation is at 60 years and the patients are in most cases chronic users of alcohol or tobacco. However, doctors at the Hippokratio Hospital more and more often have to deal with incidents of men under 45 without the aggravating factors of smoking and drinking.
