Baby-Selling Ring Busted in Thessaloniki

11062013_gadth2.limghandlerA  baby-selling ring which operated in Greece and Bulgaria has been broken up by the Aliens’ Division of the Thessaloniki Police.
Five people of Bulgarian descent have been arrested, namely two men and three women, charged with criminal association and illegal adoption by profession and speculation.
According to the police, the heads of the ring were a 52-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman, who identified pregnant women and proceeded to the necessary negotiations with prospective baby buyers. The other three members were active in assisting and attending the appointments for facilitating the group’s criminal activity.
The ring members received 15,000 euros from each baby sale in contrast to the 3,000 euros given to the babies’ natural mothers. Yesterday, the 51-year-old woman was arrested in the Ampelokipoi region, carrying with her a two-week-old baby she intended to sell.
Following the investigation in her house, the other perpetrators were identified and arrested as well, along with the 27-year-old mother of the baby who was to be sold.
The infant was immediately transferred to a special care unit of a city hospital, while the arrested will be lead to the Prosecutor of Thessaloniki.
