ERT Re-Transmitters Face Penalties

ERT_GreeceWith defiant journalists and workers at the Greek national broadcaster ERT – which the government shut down on June 11 – staying on the air and being shown on the Internet and through the Communist KKE channel, the government has warned that retransmitting the signal could lead to severe penalties, in an apparent bid to keep it off the airwaves.
The Ministry of Finances issued a statement that it is illegal for anyone to broadcast any type of programs (television or radio) with ERT’s logo, as it is unauthorized and as such may incur penalties, according to the relevant legislation.
The ministry objected to the retransmission of ERT’s program through KKE’s 902 television station. Digea, the firm handling the digital television platform in Greece, blocked 902’s transmission in a move that critics said was another attempt by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras to censor dissension and criticism of his move to shut ERT to save money as part of reforms demanded by international lenders.
