While the summer season in Greece is set to bring a record number of visitors, not everyone is heading for the beaches and islands. The number of tourists at museums and archeological sites has soared 33 percent, lured by Greece’s long history.
According to the traffic data at museums and archaeological Sites, the increased revenues in February 2013 reached 15.7% compared to the same month last year.
As for archaeological sites, there was a 44.2% increase of visitors and a 57.8% revenues increase respectively, in comparison to 2012. During the first two months of 2013, a 24.5% museum visitors’ increase was recorded along with a 7.9% increase in revenues, compared with the same period of 2012.
Moreover, the National Archaeological Museum hit a visitors’ increase of 105.6% which is in great extent due to the draw of the Antikythera Shipwreck exhibit.
In addition, more visitors came to the Museum of Ancient Olympia (by 81.9%), followed by the Palace of the Knights in Rhodes (52,8%), the Museum of Rhodes (48,5%) and the Museum of Heraklion (30.5%) . Furthermore, Mystras with a 207.4% increase in its visitors topped the list of traffic in archaeological sites, followed by Ancient Olympia (86.5%), Kameiros (75.4%), Mycenae and Knossos (60.2%) .
