Elementary and Preschools To Close

dimotiko_533_355According to a decision recently issued by the Ministry of Education, the new academic year will find Greeceā€™s school map largely shrunken. A lot of elementary and preschools around Greece will close, merge or be degraded.
According to the decision, 34 public elementary schools and five preschools will be degraded, 27 elementary schools and 13 preschools will merge with other schools, and 32 elementary schools and 89 preschools Ā will close.
The Minister of Education, Constantine Arvanitopoulos, in his meeting with the administrative board of the Greek Federation of Secondary Education State School Teachers (OLME), on May 8 mentioned 64 school mergers, of which 22 will be in secondary education and 42 in primary.
At the same time, a non paper published by the Ministry of Education the next day, on May 9 stated that, ā€œIn 2013 the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, Culture and SportsĀ will proceed to the elimination of about 60 school units on the recommendation of directors of education and regional directors, and in the majority of cases with the agreement of the local authorities where these schools are located.ā€
