Greece Keeps On Running in Crete

tromaktiko469The organizers of town races for all, Run Greece, that took place on June 16 in Heraklion, Crete, announced that the race will become an institution for Crete.
This year, Run Greece was organized by the Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics, the Region of Crete, the Region of Heraklion, the Municipality of Heraklion and WIND.
“There was massive participation of two thousand people and more in  the major sports and cultural event that also had a charitable purpose to support the Iliahtida foundation. Such events promote Heraklion and the entire Crete and our support is given for the race to become an annual institution,” the Governor of the region of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis said in accordance with the vice governor of the Region of Heraklion, Euripides Koukiadakis, the president of the Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics, Costas Panagopoulos, and the mayor of Heraklion, Yannis Kourakis.
The races, which started and ended at Eleftherias Square in Heraklion, were included in the ceremonies for the centenary of the union of Crete with Greece. According to the organizers, the aim was for more and more people to get acquainted with the joy of athletics and sports.
The race course covered the most important spots of the city, while the festive atmosphere was enhanced by the presence of a crowd along the way.
The old middle distance champion, Mihalis Afordakos, was the winner of the 10km race with 35.46 time, while the winner of the 5 km race was Miltiades Kabitakis with a time of 17.09. In the 5km for women, Anna Vasiliou came first.
