Greece’s financial crimes squad SDOE is reportedly looking at a raft of top-ranking politicians in Greece for possible unlawful enrichment, but the leak of the 36 names has set Greek officials on a hunt to find who did it. The website Zougla published the names, leading prosecutor Grigoris Peponis to order an investigation into the leak.
“Justice must quickly decide which politicians will be brought up on charges of illegal enrichment, but also which politicians are victims of malicious allegations,” said government spokesman Simos Kedikoglou, while he asked the courts to reach a conclusion “as required by the order of the Economic Prosecutor, on who leaked the documents illegally.” He said that,  “The Greek people are awaiting to see in practice that institutions are in operation and laws are being enforced.”
The list includes many prominent names, including Parliament President Evangelos Meimarakis, Independent Greeks party leader Panos Kammenos, the Chairman of the Parliament’s Audit Committee Thanasis Nakos,  and the Konstantinos Karamanlis foundation, the think tank of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ ruling New Democracy Conservative party.
No one has been officially accused of any wrongdoing. Politicians are required to list the sources of their income and their total wealth and prosecutors have been cross-referencing them to determine if the expenditures and assets are justified by the income.
