Greek police said they cornered two escapees from a Trikala Prison escape on July 2 and killed two them in a shootout in the region of of Koniska, Aitoloakarnania.
The fugitives were among five who conducted prison break and had been the subject of a manhunt. The fate of the other three remained unknown.
Police said they moved in after a thermal camera detected movements of four “objects” in the region of Mountainous Nafpaktia in western Greece.
Authorities launched a large-scale operation in the area with extensive manpower and swept through the region to keep the escapees from breaking out again.
The prisoners had escaped from Trikala prison last month and were said to be responsible for the killing of a police officer in the region of Distomo and of a 25-year old woman in Korinthos in yet another gun battle with police when she was caught in the crossfire.
