Letter Bomb Ignites in Greek Post Sorting Center

vomvaA trapped envelope containing an improvised explosive device flamed up at the Sorting Office of the Hellenic Post (ELTA) in Kryoneri, East Attica, Greece on July 3, early in the morning. It was neutralized by men of the Department of Explosive Devices Disposal (TEEM).
The Counter-Terrorism Unit is engaged in the case, while Athens News Agency considers it a terrorist act.
According to early reports, the trapped package was a folder in a yellow envelope, while the explosive device consisted of batteries, cables, a firing system and unknown until now explosive material.
The device is similar to those sent by post in the same envelopes to the former director of Korydallos prison on March 31, as well as to Haris Kastanidis when he was Minister for Justice.
The new envelope had stick labels on the outer edge, which reported the names of the sender and receiver. The sender seems to be an individual, while the receiver was a renowned former chief police officer.
The ignition occurred when the trapped envelope fell on the floor during the sorting, but the device it contained did not explode. The police were called and the Counter-Terrorist Unit’s officials arrived, along with men of TEEM, who neutralized the device with a controlled explosion.
