Zakynthos Tourism Takes Big Jump

F5946EFBD8549CEEEAEFACB2D62A9896According to official data released by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Ministry of Infrastructure Transport and Networks, tourism in Zakynthos rose by 12.5 percent in June 2013 in comparison with the same month last year.
Zakynthos or Zante (from Venetian) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the third largest of the Ionian Islands and has a reputation for drawing party crowds and drunken British visitors.
During June, some 655 charter flight aircraft landed at the island’s airport, and carried 94,431 passengers. The correspondent arrivals in June 2012 were 515 aircraft and 83,948 passengers. Domestic flights showed an increase of 318 passengers, with 1,646 arriving within Greece during June.
The UK, as expected, led the onslaught, with 228 charter flights in June carrying 44,353 passengers in total, compared to 44,429 British that flew to Zakynthos in June 2012. Russia followed with 65 flights this June carrying 10,445 passengers, to  only 4,076 Russians who arrived in June last year.
The Czech Republic is also high in the list with 44 flights and 6,895 passengers, Poland with 43 flights and 7,623 passengers and the Netherlands with 30 flights and 4,253 passengers.
