Tax Authorities Menace Pavlos Melas’ House

724C7876A0AEF6F104EE584B003EC3C3The house where Pavlos Melas, officer of the Hellenic Army and among the first who organized and participated in the Greek Struggle for Macedonia lived his precious moments of family bliss, is threatened by a triple siege.
The house located in Kifissia, Athens, is not only left to deterioration and abandonment, but now tax authorities are doing their best to drive the heiress and guardian of its history to despair.
Natalia Ioannides, Mela’s granddaughter, an IKA retiree, who lives next to the deserted house, was called to pay 5,700 euros in taxes. She refused to say how she managed to pay the sum, her meager pension being her only revenue. The fact that she doesn’t owe anymore is enough for her.
When asked what she is going to do when the time comes again to pay the property tax in the next years she answered,“It is understood that during a difficult period like this I couldn’t ask from the state to give money for the preservation of a monument officially recognized for its historical value. Anyone arguing that in this way money from public health would be cut, will be totally right.
Ioannides also described how she would like the monument to be after decades, “In a proper condition, so that people will be able to visit and see what it means to abandon a paradise and sacrifice yourself for your beliefs,” she said and rejected the idea of selling the house because she respects the historical value of the building.
