Greeks Start Liking Their Own Wines

imagesDespite the ongoing crisis, Greek wine producers are enjoying a big rise in demand coming not only from abroad but now also domestically, despite big increases in taxes on alcoholic beverages that had seen sales driven down.
Greek wine is becoming distinguished for its high quality and taste and is gaining international acclaim as proven by a recent tribute to Greece wines hosted by The Australian, the biggest-selling national newspaper in Australia.
The Australian newspaper mentions particularly the visit paid to Australia by the managers of two of the largest Greek wine producing companies, Angelos Iatrides of Alpha Estate and Paris Sigalas of Sigalas Winery.
The aim of their visit was to further promote their high quality wines to the Australian market. Both companies export a large percentage of their production. Some 32 percent of Alpha Estate production is exported while Sigalas Winery exports 42 percent.
The Greek Community of Australia appears to be a faithful buyer of Greek wines and boosts demand in the country. Though it took years for the Greek wine industry to establish itself, now Greek winemakers are before an important increase in domestic demand.
Sigalas Winery produces its wines on the ancient plain of Oia, on the island of Santorini, Greece. In Domaine Sigalas,  the most vibrant variety of the Mediterranean zone, the Santorini Assyrtiko as well as the Aidani, Athiri, Mandilaria and the Mavrotragano are put to the best use possible, and with the proper respect to their organoleptic characteristics, the quality wines are produced which receive acclaim in international competitions, both in Greece and abroad.
Alpha Estate winery is located at the neighboring to the privately owned vineyards of the viticulture exploitation in Florina in the wine region of Amyndeon. That means that transport of the grapes from the vineyard to the winery during harvest is done at the shortest possible time.
Close proximity, in combination with transport in special refrigerators and harvest at the coolest hours of the day underline the outmost respect and protection of the organoleptic characteristics of the wine grapes.
