BOG Governor Wants Tourism Expanded

assets_LARGE_t_942_43563872 “Greek tourisn can contribute to the development, however, it has to reduce its seasonal nature,” stated the Governor of the Bank of Greece George Provopoulos in his speech at the conference Greek tourism and Climate Change: Adjustment Policies and Development Strategy.
Provopoulos underlined that Greece can turn into a center of tourist education for the wider region and tourism can increase the country’s GDP. However, at the same time, he presented the weak parts such as the season and geographical concentration  and slow adjustment to the new conditions of demand as well as to the increasing regional competition.
These shortcomings can be eliminated with both  the state’s and the private sector’s cooperation and establishment of a long-term strategic planning for the sector, he said. Provopoulos mentioned that private sector has to undertake entrepreneurial initiatives which will benefit from the country’s comparative advantages, respect the environment and the cultural heritage and promote competitiveness of the product, leaving behind shortsighted practices that are solely based on short-term profit.
On the other hand the state, both the government and the local administration included, must, primarily, achieve the optimal allocation of the limited public resourses and then to continue to improve its business activity environment, he said. As far the upgrading of the tourism product is concerned, Provopoulos stresses that this can be achieved through the attraction of wealthier visitors.
