ERT Workers Call EDT “Pirate Construct”

ertThe fired workers of the closed national broadcaster ERT, who were dismissed on June 11, derisively dismissed the government’s new temporary station, EDT, set up in an attempt to meet a court order that ERT’s signal had to be restored until a permanent new broadcaster was set up.
They said that EDT, which will show only documentaries and movies but not carry any news or other programs, was a “pirate construct” although they are also broadcasting a pirate operation via Internet and satellite.
The said that “even the last “mask” has fallen off the face of a government they characterized as autocratic because Prime Minister Antonis Samaras axed their jobs by decree instead of taking a bill to Parliament.
The said the government’ action was unconstitutional although the Council of State gave Samaras the right to restructure the operation at the same time it said he had to keep ERT on the air, which he refused to do. The premier said he was trying to fulfill the orders of international lenders who wanted the public workforce sheared in return for bailouts to keep the economy alive.
