Court Orders Release Of Hunger Striker Sakkas

sakkasGreece’s Judicial Council of Appeals on July 11 ordered the release of political hunger striker, jailed anarchist Kostas Sakkas, said to be near death after refusing to eat since June 4 to protect what he said was his unlawful detention.
It was unclear whether Prime Minister Antonis Samaras would obey the court, although it set tight conditions for Sakkas’ release, including a ban on leaving the country, mandatory appearance every Monday at the police station of the area, a bail of 30,000 euros, a ban on meeting or communication with his fellow defendants, confiscation of his passport, compulsory residence at his parent’s house and a limitation on movement restricted to the Attica prefecture.
Prosecutors alleged he was a member of a terrorist organization but didn’t charge him. He was kept past the 18 months and 30 months limit of pretrial detention, the Constitutional ceiling, after the government asserted multiple charges meant it could keep him longer, although the law forbids it.
His case aroused the concern of the European Commission and Amnesty International and caused the intense international interest and led some academics and lawmakers to say they would start hunger strikes in sympathy next week if he didn’t die in the meantime. His condition was said to be very serious, according to his lawyers and an examining doctor.
Thanassis Karabelis,  a doctor hired by his family, told the Associated Press that, “He could die at any moment. I am very clear: Kostas Sakkas is in the final stage of the hunger strike,” the doctor said.
