Greece Pushes Sunday Store Openings

consumerA long-standing Greek practice of keeping most stores closed on Sunday looks like it’s going to change. Small stores of up to 250 meters will be allowed to open every Sunday under a bill being prepared by the government.
Larger stores will be able to be open seven Sundays a year during Christmas, Easter and designated sales periods in a bid to bring in customers as traffic has fallen off sharply during a crushing economic crisis, with has closed more than 68,000 businesses in the last three years.
The regulation is also aimed at attempting to revive municipal centers, giving the tourists the chance to make purchases for the benefit of the economy and a competitive advantage for small businesses.
According to a recent OECD report, the operation of stores on Sundays could generate up to 30,000 new jobs in the trade sector and could bring in at least another 309 million euros, about $403.4 million a year in revenues.
