Corfu's Achilleion Palace To Be Restored

achilleionThe Central Council of Modern Monuments has approved the reconstruction of the old palace complex on Corfu, known as the Achilleion.
The Achilleion is a palace built in Corfu in 1889-1892 by Empress of Austria Elisabeth of Bavaria, also known as Sisi, after a suggestion by Austrian Consul Alexander von Watzberg.
After her death it was purchased by Kaiser William II of Germany. During World Wars I and II, the palace was abandoned and pillaged by enemy combatants. Afterwards it operated more like a casino and soon after that it was turned into a museum.
The project’s budget exceeds 14 million euros ($18.36 million) and will involve the renovation of the Palace, the building of barracks of the Baron and the Concierge, which are going to be used differently by the end of restoration.
Maintenance will include reversible interventions in order for the buildings to be protected from humidity, corrosion and structural distortions. Furthemore, the palace’s initial main stairway, which is near collapse, will also be restored.
