How to Eat Better in Greece

How to eat better in Greece

It is officially summer time now, which means the tourist season in Greece has started. Beautiful sunsets, amazing beaches, breathtaking landscapes and wonderful Greek islands… We’ve painted quite a picture there, haven’t we? However, wouldn’t it be better when choosing Greece for your holiday making, to be also aware of some pretty useful tips when it comes to food?
First of all, it is important that you order the right things to eat at touristy places.
So here are some tasty Greek choices: Greek salad, tzatziki, Fava (yellow split pea dip), boiled greens (Horta) accompanied with feta cheese, anchovies or sardines-marinated or salted, lathera: Cooked vegetables in oil, and of course one of the most well-known Greek not so light dishes, moussaka.
Moreover, you should definitely avoid places that have a little bit of everything. That is restaurants/taverns which offer Greek food together with pizza, pasta or fast-food. The result would be average dishes along with customers who leave the place pretty much disappointed.
GreekMezeAdditionally, when coming to Greece you should also choose to eat more fish instead of meat. While 80% of Greece is mountainous, Greece has been associated with the sea, and Greeks have a very strong sea culture. Fish have always had a special place in the Greek cuisine as well. From prawn (garides) saganaki and Greek sea bass to octopus with pasta, they are all an excellent choice, so just go for it!
Also, it is important to know where to look. The best way to eat well in Greece is to get some personal recommendations from friends who have actually been there before. Tourist guides and the Internet could be misleading at times, even bombarding tourists with useless information on the real Greek food experience.
Last but not least, choose the delicious Greek desserts that you cannot find elsewhere. Amygdalota (fluffy almond-egg white cookies), walnut cake (karythopita), Greek donuts with honey and walnuts (loukoumades), kaimaki and mastiha ice cream, are some of the must choices. Many Greek restaurants choose to offer chocolate-based desserts, but in that case I definitely advise you to just go Greek and ask for something a little bit more traditional.
