Composer Nikos Mamagakis Died

9F4956DD2D34F6C8A955A42C59A7402DNikos Mamagakis (born in Rethymno, Crete, in 1929), one of the most important composers of contemporary Greek music with a great work behind, died early in the morning of July 24.  He suffered from cancer and was hospitalized in a coma at the Henry Dunant Hospital in Athens.
The announcement of his death was made on his official Facebook page by Dimitris Dermanis who wrote, “Today at dawn Nikos Mamagakis left us. He left behind an irreplaceable gap and a huge music work  that will always accompany us. Have a nice trip … ”
His list of works include all kinds of music: music for the theater, the cinema and television, operas, electronic music, orchestral works, song cycles and more.
Mamagakis started his studies at the Athens Conservatory and then from 1957 on at the Music Academy of Munich, Germany next to Carl Orff.
