Residents of Kozani were shocked to discover what police said was a case of a mother and son being kept hostage in a house behind lock and key, where they were reportedly found lying among piles of garbage and animal dirt, malnourished and suffering dozens of rodent bites.
Authorities said that’s what they discovered when they entered the house, bringing up images of a similar case in the village of Kostalexi. Even health officials said they were horrified at what they saw.
The victims were taken to the hospital while the woman’s husband, 68, was arrested and taken before the court where officials said he would be charged with unlawful detention.
According to the prosecution authorities, this family has repeatedly been referred to the welfare and the health services as well as the Regional Authorities of Kozani in the past as residents said the mother and son had been seen searching through garbage for food and clothes.
