Strong Tremor Near Samothrace, Tenedos

seismosResidents of the Greek islands of Samothrace and Tenedos, and as far away as Mytilene, were rocked by an earthquake of 5.1 Richter on July 30, recorded by the Euro-Mediterranean Institute. It was even felt in the town of Kavala on the mainland.
Geology professor Efthimios Lekkas said the quake hit below the water level between Samothraki and Tenedos, right above the Anatolian fault. “It occurred at the spot where the Anatolian fault exits from Turkey and enters Greece,” Lekkas reported.
Seismologists expressed their fears that the 5.1 magnitude earthquake may not be the main quake. “If it had occurred at a different area, we would say that it was the main earthquake and that aftershocks would follow,” Lekkas said. He added: “Now that it occurred at the Anatolian fault, it is very likely that more earthquakes of the same magnitude or stronger will follow.”
“The Anatolian fault has the possibility to produce strong earthquakes, but the positive element is that it is located at the submarine area of Northern Aegean Sea, where there are no built-up areas, thereby reducing risk,” Lekkas concluded.
Seismologists are monitoring closely the development of the aftershock sequence. Despite the size and intensity of the quake, no injuries or damage was reported.
