purkagia-markopouloThe fire that is still out of control, broke out at around 2 p.m. at  Markopoulos of Attica and precisely in the Cherovouni that is between Markopoulo and Porto Rafti.
According to the latest information, the flames are very close to the forest of Kouvaras and are approaching the racecourse. The fire is destroying houses, yards and warehouses.
The Fire Brigade is doing its best, while the Municipality of Markopoulo addressed an urgent call for help. The fire is burning olive groves which  are fenced and the firefighters cannot enter. In addition, the fire reached the village Mezoyeres.
Fifty fire trucks and 100 fire fighters have been struggling all this time to put the fire under control.
Sotiris Methonitis, the Mayor of Markopoulo stressed to newsit.gr that while the situation is tragic at present, neither the monastery of Saint Anna nor the children summer camps that are near Kouvaras are in danger. However, he added that if the fire enters the forest of Kouvaras, this will be the biggest ecological disaster of the last 100 years in Attica.
The desperate residents are struggling to save their properties with buckets of water. The strong winds blowing in the region have been making the work of  the Fire Brigade even harder.
