After Centuries, Ancient Messini Theater Opens

arxaio theatro messinisAfter hundreds of years of lying still, the theater of Ancient Messini re-opened on Aug. 3, with an opera gala, organized by the Athens & Epidaurus Festival 2013 and the Municipality of Messini and the Region of Peloponnese, among others.
The theater was revealed by Petros Themelis, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology, who has the responsibility of the excavation project in ancient Messini and it was partly restored with funding by the 2nd and 3rd Community Support Framework (CSF) and completed with a donation by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF).
Crowds of people packed into the seats of the ancient theater. The Deputy Minister for Sports, Yiannis Andrianos, Deputy Minister for Administrative Reform and E-Governance, Evi Christofilopoulou, Greek MPs, the Governor of the Region of Peloponnese, Petros Tatoulis, the former minister and president of DIAZOMA Association, Stavros Benos, local and regional factors in Messinia, people from the world of letters and arts, as well as of businesses, attended the event.
A group of teachers held a protest at the entrance to the archaeological site before the concert, concerning the suspensions and dismissals of their colleagues.
