Lechaina Student Out Of This World

maroudaKrinio Marouda, a student from Lechaina, a town in Elis, West Greece, won the bronze medal at the 7th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), which took place for the first time in Greece.
This is the second medal in IOAA for Marouda, as in 2012, she won the bronze medal in the Olympiad that took place in Brazil.
During the 7th IOAA, more than 180 young men and women from 36 countries participated. The Greek mission collected one silver medal, four bronze and four special mentions.
The 7th IOAA, which was under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, was held from July 27 until August 5 in the city of Volos in Thessaly on the Greek mainland. That was the first time that such an important scientific and cultural event took place in a country of the European Union.
The idea for the IOAA came from representatives of Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, China and Poland attending the International Physics Olympiad, both as a high-standard competition for high-school students and as a means to promote astronomy and astrophysics in education.
The first IOAA was held in Thailand in 2007, followed by events in Indonesia, Iran, China, Poland and Brazil, as reported in the 7th IOAA website which is www.ioaa2013.gr
