Big Cretan Serenade Over Rethymno

KANTEDA_KENTRIKI_533_355Anogia, Rethymno, was the meeting point on Aug. 11 for the people of the Greek island of Crete who put together the biggest serenade ever there.
Cretans crossed the paths of Anogia singing songs of acknowledged Cretan artists such as Xylouris, Mountakis and Skordalos honoring the centennial anniversary since the unification of Crete with Greece.
Those coming from Rethymno and Chania came from the south entrance of the village while those from Lasithi and Heraclion came from the north. The sound of the lyra, lute and mandolin filled the air of every neighborhood and village streets with Cretan music.
More than 500 dancers from all over the island and 38 bands took part in this venture as well, all dressed in traditional costumes while exchanging serenades honoring the Cretan struggle for freedom and national independence.
Among them was a Greek-Australian dance band which praised Crete, along with its history and great tradition. In the end, the dancers performed all together in the rhythm of the five best-known Cretan folklore dances.
