Fare Evader, 18, Killed Jumping Off Trolley

elegxos eisitirionWith Greece stepping up ticket enforcement on public transportation, authorities said an 18-year-old was killed trying to avoid a ticket check, while he was on a trolley bus the night of Aug. 13.
The young man was on the trolley bus 7039 that was heading to Anthoupoli, suburb of Athens, Greece, when a controller stepped in and headed towards the young man asking for his ticket, it was reported.
The 18-year-old did not have a ticket and the controller asked him to get off the bus with him at the terminal station as the young man didn’t have the money to pay the fare, about $1.85, and faced a big fine. Metro fare evaders have to pay 60 times the ticket price.
According to eyewitnesses, the young man suddenly pressed the danger button, opened the door and in his attempt to escape, jumped out of the vehicle and as hit his head on the pavement.
According to the National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB), he was transferred seriously injured to the hospital Agia Olga and then to the General Hospital of Athens G. Gennimatas, where a little after 5 a.m. he passed away.
The driver and the controller were not arrested at first. However, after the young man died they were taken into custody as part of a police investigation that will include taking testimony from passengers.
