Two Greek Universities In Top 500

AUTH_Campus_3The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking, has put the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) at 301st and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens at 335th in the top 500 in the world, the same general ranking as last year.
In a surprise, AUTH ranked ahead of one of the U.S.’ prestigious Catholic schools, Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. American colleges had 17 of the top 20, led by Harvard at number one, Stanford, UCal-Berkeley, MIT, CalTech, Princeton and Columbia, in the top 10.
Two British universities, Cambridge at number 5 and Oxford at 10 were the only others competitive with the top U.S. Schools. The rankings are conducted by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University on the basis of the academic and research performances of each university.
In order to carry out these rankings, ARWU takes into consideration a series of the factors, such as the number of professors who win a Nobel Prizes, and other prizes in their subject, the number of publications to particular scientific magazines, the per capita performances in relation with the size of the institution and other.
In addition to the ranking of the universities at world level, the universities are also ranked regarding the scientific field and topic. In the field of clinical medicine and pharmacy field, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens ranks at the positions 151-200, while in the field of computer engineering AUTH ranks at the positions 151-200.
The University of Athens also ranks at the positions 101-150 regarding the science of physics, while the same institution ranks at the same positions regarding informatics where AUTH lists at the positions 151-200 along with the National Technical University (NTUA).
