First Death from West Nile Virus in Attica

mosquitoThe West Nile Virus (WNV) continues spreading in Attica and Northern Greece. According to the latest epidemiological data by the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (HCDCP), the number of cases of people infected with the West Nile Virus reaches 35, while this is the first time a death caused by the disease’s complications has been recorded.
An 81-year-old man, who had a history of bad health and was hospitalized in Attica with an infection of the central nervous system, was the victim of the WNV.
Most of the serious cases of the WNV are located in Attica, where more than 20 individuals manifested encephalitis or meningitis after the infection of the WNV in the Attica basin. The rest of the cases concern the regions of Kavala, Xanthi and Thessaloniki.
According to the HCDCP data, the municipalities that are at high risk for the virus transmission are: Spata-Artemida, Paiania, Pallini, Markopoulo-Mesogaia, Rafina-Pikermi, Irakleio, Maroussi, Vrilissia, Chalandri, Agia Paraskevi and Galatsi.
In the rest of the country, the disputed areas are: Ampelokipoi-Menemeni, Evosmos-Kordelio, Oraiokastro, 1st Municipal District of Thessaloniki, Chalkidona and Delta in Thessaloniki. The municipalities of Avdira and Xanthi in Xanthi, the municipalities of Alexandria andVeria in Veria, the municipality of Pella and the municipality of Nestos in Kavala.
HCDCP reminds the residents of the disputed areas to take personal protection measures against mosquitoes.
