Greece Probing Why Doctors Shun Generics

ypografi_564_355Greece’s National Healthcare Organisation EOPYY is paying out scores of millions of euros for prescription drugs instead of generics and Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis wants to see if they are collaborating with drug companies.
Among the most extreme cases are:
-A doctor without specialty in Serres who gave 2,700 prescriptions worth 120,000 euros within one-month period
– A pathologist doctor in Agrinio who gave 2,800 prescriptions worth 115,000 euros within also one-month period
– Another pathologist, who gave  33 prescriptions in one month, of total cost of 110,000 euros with an average prescription value of 3,400 euros each
– A  doctor in Agrinio, has been prescribing at 70% to a specific pharmacy which makes up 90% of the latter’s turnover
Georgiadis has asked doctors to return any monies they may have received from drug companies for prescribing their brands.
